Buttler had played very nicely on his Test return up until that point but that will be little comfort to him – he will know a big score was for the taking on this pitch.

Bairstow then works one off his toes as Shami follows it up with a ball that moves into the right-hander this time.

So after losing four wickets in the morning session, that one cost England just the solitary scalp of Stokes - and while India can still feel pleased with their day's work so far, the tourists have taken some of the gloss off.
